据中国大陆媒体“红星新闻”12月24日报道，美国达美航空DL287号航班原计划12月21日晚从美国西雅图塔克马国际机场起飞，经停韩国仁川机场，于12月23日抵达上海浦东机场。
报导说，当飞机到达俄罗斯边界上空时，突然返航。后来接到通知，该航班的再次起飞时间改为12月22日晚，预计12月24日凌晨降落上海浦东机场。这一次，在比通知起飞时间晚了一小时后，12月22日晚飞机起飞。
但在飞机飞行了约6小时后，机长通知称“由于中国入境政策临时发生变化，航班上所有人的健康码不被认证”。
实时跟踪航班信息的网站（FlightAware）内容显示，12月22日从美国西雅图起飞的航班DL287经俄罗斯边境上空后折返，于12月23日重新降落于西雅图。
值得一提的是，飞机上有许多在美国留学的中国学生，他们的签证已经过期，加上很多的人防疫健康码也面临过期，美国负责处理防疫码以及签证等延期工作的部门正在圣诞休假，无法办理延期手续。
因此，这架航班返回美国后，机上许多中国乘客都将被迫面临“非法入境”的局面。
对于这次返航事件，有大陆网民怀疑，是因为机组人员要回美国过圣诞节，所以他们要“按时下班”。但这种说法马上遭到网民反驳。
有大陆网民在新浪微博上说，“机组因为过圣诞就返航？联邦法律肯定要吊销执照的。实际上是因为我们民航局新规要求增加3至5小时消杀时间，导致机组被迫超时而违反联邦法律，所以机组不得不返航。”
